Description
The Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) at the Florida State University (FSU) invites applications for a Research Faculty I, 12-month salaried, position in the area of oceanographic research and teaching.
JOB DUTIES:
Assigned teaching and research duties in physical oceanography with an emphasis on computer modeling. Responsible for developing, planning, and implementing teaching lessons for FSU students.
Responsible for performing original basic and applied research in physical oceanography with an emphasis on computer modeling of hydrodynamics/thermodynamics, data assimilation, and analysis of satellite oceanographic data as related to the development of ocean environment prediction capabilities.
Expected to present research results at national and international conferences and publish results in refereed journals.
Responsible for preparing and submitting proposals to government agencies including but not limited to the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to obtain external funding.
Expected to provide services for the scientific community such as serving as a convener and session chair in national and international conferences, evaluating student presentations at these conferences and reviewing papers and proposals.
Responsible for providing research assistance to colleagues, advising and providing scientific support for postdoctoral associates, students, interns, and visitors.

Requirements
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography or a closely related discipline.
Other Special Skills or Requirements:
Demonstrated record of achievement in academic research, publications, and service.
Experience (not actual employment experience, but knowledge or expertise) working with and evaluating numerical ocean models, particularly the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model or the Navy Coastal Ocean Model.
Experience (not actual employment experience, but knowledge or expertise) with running numerical models, particularly performing Observing System Simulation Experiments and Observing System Evaluations.
Experience (not actual employment experience, but knowledge or expertise) processing, analyzing, and comparing ocean observations and model data.
Experience (not actual employment experience, but knowledge or expertise) working in a Linux environment and running interactive/batch jobs on HPC machines.
Knowledge of data assimilation and input observation sources would be beneficial.
Proficiency in Python, Fortran, and Git.
Proficiency in basic Linux scripting.
Experience on High Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
Skill in Microsoft Word and Power Point software packages.
