2.5-Year Project Researcher Position on Particle-based Cloud Modeling

University of Hyogo (Kobe, Japan) is hiring a project researcher on particle-based cloud modeling starting at the earliest possible date.

The super-droplet method (SDM) is a particle-based numerical scheme that enables accurate simulation of clouds (Shima et al., 2009), which is gaining popularity in rencent years (Grabowski et al., 2019; Morrison et al., 2020). Using SDM, we developed SCALE-SDM, a detailed numerical model of mixed-phase clouds in which ice particle morphologies are explicitly predicted (Shima et al., 2020).

The aim of this project is on the evaluation and sophistication of our particle-based cloud model, SCALE-SDM, and its application to deep convective clouds and cloud clusters with heavy rain. The successful candidate will belong to Shin-ichiro Shima's research group, and will work in collaboration with Dr Shima and other project members.

This subproject is one of the work packages of “Development of an atmospheric simulation model for probability estimation for local atmospheric phenomena” (PM: Seiya Nishizawa, R-CCS), which also is a project of the Moonshot Research and Development Program Goal #8 “Realization of a society safe from the threat of extreme winds and rains by controlling and modifying the weather by 2050” (PD: Takemasa Miyoshi, R-CCS) (https://www.jst.go.jp/moonshot/en/program/goal8/index.html).

Compensations

  • Near 2.5 year appointment starting at the earliest possible until the end of Mar 2025
  • Monthly salary of about 340,000 JPY (about 2,500 USD) plus bonus plus commuting allowance
  • Health & pension insurance is evenly paid by the employee and the project
  • Conference fees, travel fees are covered

  • Programming skills for scientific computing
